Since 1987, IIUM has produced more than 70,000 graduates and scholars from more than 100 countries worldwide. Most of them are from Malaysia.

The idea of ​​an international Islamic educational institution in 1982 during a meeting of OIC leaders on the Islamization of knowledge. IIUM was a private university. The vice president of the council is traditionally the secretary general of the Ministry of Education and Culture. In addition to the president and vice president, the council consists of 15 members, including the secretary general of the OIC and the chief diplomats of the member countries, namely Bangladesh, Egypt, Libya, the Maldives, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. The board of trustees is assisted by the satay, a body which oversees the university’s academic and student affairs, and by a management committee which oversees the day-to-day operations of the university. IIUM is based on a 700-acre (2.8 km²) campus in Gombak, Selangor and has six other campuses. The Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Mosque is located in the middle of the Gombak campus. The main prayer hall of the mosque has a maximum capacity of 9,000, with women’s prayer rooms on the second and third floors. The mosque organizes lectures, seminars and courses on concepts such as marriage and Janazah management, recitation and Tahfiz Al-Qur’an, as well as activities such as Qiyamullail and Tarbiyyah and training for santri.

IIUM started with 153 students in 1983. Today about 3000 students participate each year. About 27,000 students from more than 40 Muslim majority countries and also students from non-Muslim countries such as Germany, Finland, China, South Korea, Japan, India, USA are studying at IIUM so far. IIUM is the only public university in Malaysia that requires all foundation and undergraduate students to attend Usrahs, which are Islamic study circles held weekly for social, spiritual and intellectual upliftment. Since the inception of IIUM, Usrah has become a requirement for students to graduate from IIUM. As of 2014, apart from the centralized Usrahs, which are also mandatory for high school students living on campus, separate Usrahs are held in the dormitories.

IIUM is well known locally and internationally for debates, public speeches and discussions. In 2014, IIUM was ranked t out of 440 teams that participated in the 35th World University Debate Championship.
