Mombasa is a city in Kenya’s Coast Province, located on the Indian Ocean.

It is the largest city in the country’s coastal region and the fifth largest in Africa.

As Kenya’s main port city, Mombasa has historically been a multicultural hub with a large ethnic and religious diversity.

The city’s cosmopolitan nature is reflected in its local culture and traditions.

Muslims make up more than half of Mombasa’s population; they live mainly in the city’s coast and island regions.

However, many Muslims also live in other parts of the country, including Nairobi, which serves as Kenya’s capital city.

The businesses and neighborhoods frequented by Muslims have come to be known as the Muslim ghettos, but this terminology may be misleading as many non-Muslims also frequent these areas for shopping or socializing with family members or friends from outside their community.

These ghettos @ which were once slums @ have become popular urban zones because they offer affordable housing compared to other parts of Nairobi frequented by wealthier citizens or NRM members (Non-Religious Minority).

The affordability factor makes these areas ideal for university students seeking accommodation during school breaks when they visit relatives back home for holidays.

These visiting relatives often stay with friends or family members whom they have made along their travels@ thus reinforcing social ties within these migrant communities across Kenya’s coastal regions.

Although many early Muslim immigrants came from Zanzibar where Islam was already established before their own migration, today there is greater tolerance for religious pluralism across Africa through international aid programs like those implemented by USAID (United States Agency for International Development).

On December 30, 1885, the first group of Muslims to arrive in Mombasa from Zanzibar arrived at what is now Gatundu@ an area popular with tourists today.

From that time forward, more Muslim immigrants would come to settle in Mombasa@ most of them from Zanzibar and other African countries.

In recent years, many of these immigrants have settled down and started families in Mombasa’s Muslim neighborhoods.

These areas are characterized by high densities of Muslim migrants living close to each other@ referred to as Mezcoms or ghettos. These neighborhoods are home to over 2 million people and are characterized by low-quality infrastructure and poor living conditions.

Lack of clean water and sanitation facilities has contributed to communicable diseases such as cholera among these communities.

Nonetheless, despite these challenges, many Muslims continue to settle down in these areas due to their affordable housing prices compared to other parts of the city where they may reside.

MOST MUSLIMS IN MOMBASA ARE SWAHILI-SPEAKING BUT THERE ARE ALSO ETHNIC MINORITY COMMUNITIES FROM MAINLAND EAST AFRICA LIKE SOMALIS WHO ARRIVED GENERATIONS AGO DURING SOMALIA’S CIVIL WAR ERA (1960-1990).

The predominantly Somali coastal region hosts one of Kenya’s largest concentration areas of Somalis@ most having migrated from Somalia’s northern regions during their country’s civil war era.

This region also hosts a large number of Islamic schools where students learn Arabic poetry under renowned sheiks like Abdirizak Moalin Hurry Eyda (Abu Huraira).

Several mosques remain active throughout the year@ including one near Nairobi’s airport that welcomes travelers from all over the world with free food offerings at sunset on Fridays during Ramadan.
