Islam is the second largest religion in the world after Christianity and arguably the fastest growing. Islam is also one of the three main religions in the world – Muslims, Jews and Christians all believe in the same God that Muslims call God. Prophet Muhammad Rasulullah revealed Islam to the world in the form of the Holy Book, the Qur’an. The word “Islam” comes from the Arabic word for peace, and the word “Muslim” is often translated as “supplication”.

There are an estimated 1.3 billion Muslims in the world. Although they are often conflated, not all Muslims are Arabs (whose mother tongue is Arabic), and not all Arabs are Muslims. Arab Muslims make up 15 percent of the world’s Muslims. Of the 220 million Arabs in the world, about 10 percent are not Muslim. For example, Indonesia is the largest Muslim country with 215 million Muslims. Perhaps surprisingly, African-Americans, not Arabs, make up the largest ethnic group among American Muslims (35 percent of American Muslims), according to Gallup. All over the world, Muslims learn Arabic in order to read and understand the Qur’an and perform ritual prayers in Arabic.

In the 6th century AD (general chronology), Islam rose to prominence in Arabia, a melting pot of many religions. Judaism and Christianity were looked at, but the religion of the tribal gods was the most spiritual at the time.

Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, was born in Mecca (now Saudi Arabia) in 570. During Ramadan (which occurs in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar), Muslims believe they experience revelation from God. Muhammad meditated in a nearby cave where the angel Gabriel appeared to him with a message of peace (Islam).

Muhammad soon began sharing his revelation with his family and friends. Going forward, he spread the message to the public saying that “God is one” and devotion to Him is very important.

In times of tribal conflict, Muhammad’s message of peace met with resistance. Muhammad fled to the nearby city of Medina, about 250 miles north of Mecca, in what was called the Hijra (migration). This marks the beginning of the Islamic era and calendar.

Ultimately, despite a period of great conflict, Muhammad was able to unite the warring tribes and return to Mecca. He died in Medina in 632 without a male heir. By his death most Arabs had converted to Islam.

During the Middle Ages and Dark Ages in Europe, the Islamic civilization flourished in a golden age and was considered the most advanced civilization in the world. When in 1258 By the time the Mongols destroyed Baghdad, the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate, more than 36 libraries already existed. However, in the 18th and 19th centuries, many Islamic civilizations came under European imperial rule before the reforms of the 20th century began.

Over time, the Muslim community was divided into several branches. Journalists must be sensitive to the diverse beliefs of these branches, as the Islamic community is not the only body. In fact, there are many groups and factions that fall under the umbrella of Islam. Those seeking general information about Islam should be careful not to rely too heavily on organizations outside of mainstream Islam. As in Christianity or Judaism, different sects have different interpretations of Islamic teachings, which can be considered classical, traditional, modern or reformist.

The word “fundamentalist” should not be used to refer to Muslim groups. Technically, all Muslims are “fundamentalists” because they follow the teachings of the Koran and Muhammad, but adding the term forgets this context and often adds a derisive meaning. Also, not all groups called “Muslims” are considered as such in mainstream Islam.

Sunnis: Sunnis make up 85 percent of the world’s Muslims. The Sunnah, or example of Muhammad’s life, is the basis of Sunni teaching. Sunni Islam consists of six beliefs known as the Pillars of Faith. These are:

In addition to these six basic principles, Sunni Muslims also follow the 105 principles of the Tahawiyyah faith. Islam has no legal hierarchy. For example, the congregation chooses its imam to lead the Friday service.

Shia: Shia make up 15 percent of the world’s Muslims, including majorities in Iran, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, and Iraq. Shiism developed after the death of Muhammad, when his followers divided over who would lead Islam. The Shia branch favored Muhammad Ali Ibn Abi Talib’s cousin and son-in-law. His followers are called Shiites.

Ismaili: This Shia branch is headed by the Aga Khan, the title given to the head of the branch. These are predominantly Indo-Iranian communities, but can be found in India, Pakistan, Syria, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, China, Jordan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, East Africa, and South Africa. Over the years they have also migrated to North America, Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

Sufi:  This is a mystical branch of Islam. Although small in number, Sufis are among the Sunnis and Shiites.

Known for the poetry of writers such as the 13th-century Persian writer Rumi, Sufism often includes dance and worship music. It is more of a religious practice than a separate denomination. Some Muslims criticize Sufism as a wrong reform.

Wahhabism: This is a strict form of Islam prevalent in Saudi Arabia and Qatar that adheres to a strict and literal interpretation of the Koran.

Most people in the West knew nothing about Wahhabism until the 9/11 attacks by Wahhabi terrorist Osama bin Laden. Wahhabism has grown rapidly since the 1970s, when the oil-rich Saudi royal family began donating money to it. It is considered a form of extremist Sunni Islam that enforces the rules and criticizes those who follow other Islamic traditions.

The Salafi movement has often been described as closely related to or similar to the Wahhabi movement; but Salafis consider the word “Wahhabi” derogatory, according to French author Olivier Roy, author of The Failure of Political Islam.

As a legacy of the Ottoman Empire, the Kurdistan region consists of northern Iraq, western Iran, eastern Turkey, and northeastern Syria. Some Kurds also live in Lebanon and Russia. If the Kurds are a tribe, the Kurds do not have their own country, just like the Palestinians. In recent years, this has led to regional conflicts in countries such as Turkey and Syria.

According to the percentage of followers, Hanafi is the largest – 31 percent. Maliki is the second largest sect with 25 percent of Islam’s followers. Ja’fari (23%), Shafi’i (16%) and Hanbali (4%). The remaining one percent attend minority schools such as Zaydi and Isma’ili.
