Sometimes Wills offers wonderful summaries of themes from the Quran, as when he writes: “Whether we look inwardly or outwardly at the stars, everything speaks of Him [God]. At the beginning of the book, Wills admits to his readers that he has his own prejudices and stereotypes about Muslims and their faith. This is one of the more important statements Wills makes, as he gives readers permission to be honest about any biases they may have. Taking the reader on his journey through the Qur’an, Wills makes a concerted effort to challenge his and his audience’s preconceived notions of him. But I would argue that learning about Islam has to involve much more than reading the Koran and it doesn’t necessarily have to start there. Before I encourage my fellow believers to read the Quran, I want to encourage them to get to know Muslims, not just face-to-face, but also on social media, where so many Muslim leaders and ordinary people share their different views. I am convinced that many of the stereotypical questions non-Muslims have about Islam will not feel as pressing when we meet real-life Muslims and see how their faith manifests itself in their lives.

Wills believes that picking up the Quran is the cure for our fear of Islam. But the solution to dealing with Islamophobia is not to pick up the Koran. As Wills admits, “the actual encounter with the Quran has failed to help me deal with Islam as others understand it…. What was the use of reading the Koran then…?” Wills wonders. Islamophobia is not just a religion issue. Islamophobia, a form of bigotry and racism, is a much deeper problem than ignorance of religious beliefs and will simply not be eradicated if we all learn more about Islam, just as it would be wrong to think that reading the Torah is the first step right (or any other step) in addressing our anti-Semitism, it is a mistake to think that reading the Quran is the starting point for addressing our Islamophobia.

Muslims do not read the Quran outside the context of their larger religious tradition (just as Catholics and other Christians do not read the Bible in a vacuum).

However, many non-Muslims want to read the Quran for spiritual elevation or to learn about the spiritual life of Muslims, and this is an admirable goal.
